Residents of the EastLake community in Chula Vista, Calif. recently purchased and decorated a total of 170 ceramic tiles that were installed around the fireplace of the courtyard at EastLake Village Marketplace, a new 410,000-square-foot community retail center located at the northwest corner of Otay Lakes Road and EastLake Parkway in Chula Vista.

Sudberry Properties, Inc., developer and property manager for EastLake Village Marketplace, organized the tile donation program under the direction of Senior Property Manager Dianna Lawless. Tiles were sold for $20 each, with all proceeds above cost benefiting the EastLake Educational Foundation (EEF). Sudberry Properties paid for the installation of all tiles. Installation of the tiles began Monday, May 17, 2004.

Members of the EastLake community purchased an eight-inch-square, plain white tile at Daydreams Ceramic Café located in the shopping center. With the aid and encouragement of the hardworking Daydreams staff, families then decorated their tiles with an array of brightly colored individual designs, ranging from school artwork, outdoor scenes and patterns, to kids handprints and baby footprints.

According to Dianna Lawless, only 150 tiles were originally available for purchase. "However, we had such a positive response from the community that we increased the limit to 170," she said. "It's been a great way for EastLake residents to get together for a fun and creative "feel-good" project, that also gives something back to their community. Once the tiles are installed around the courtyard fireplace, they'll be a permanent reminder of the strong community spirit that EastLake Village Marketplace was built to embrace."
