40 Under 40 Award-Colton Sudberry Brings Second Generation of Leadership.
September 2007
When Colton Sudberry started his freshman year at the University of Colorado in 1990, someday joining the family business was the last thing in the offing because his father, Tom, founder and head of San Diego's Sudberry Properties Inc., semi-retired. So instead of real estate, he majored in international business and marketing.
Returning to San Diego, young Sudberry did go into commercial real estate brokerage, first with CB Richard Ellis and then the Corti-Gilchrist Partnership. He earned his master's degree in real estate development from the University of Southern California's School of Policy, Planning and Development just as Tom Sudberry ramped up the company’s activity.
Now senior vice president of Sudberry Properties, Colton, 36, is principal and partner-in-charge of more than 2.7 million square feet of active retail, office and mixed-use projects, either entitled or under construction, throughout the Southland.
As Sudberry and wife Cindy await the birth of their third child, he wishes he had more time for community activities but knows his priorities. “My family and my walk with God are my personal passions,” says the golf, bird-hunting and yoga enthusiast. "I absolutely love my work. What I do is a big part of my life. We’re creating mixed-use retail centers of quality that fulfill the needs of their communities as lasting enhancements."
