Sudberry Properties Announces Opening of Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton at Breakwater Town Center

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. – Sudberry Properties and Tharaldson Hospitality Management announce the opening of the newly constructed 100-guestroom Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton at Breakwater Town Center, 771 Palm Ave. The four-story, 62,000-square-foot hotel features “beach modern” architecture, a fitness center, breakfast and lounge area, business center, outdoor swimming pool and free Wi-Fi. A ceremonial ribbon cutting is expected to be announced in the near future.

The hotel, which occupies 1.5 acres and includes 100 parking spaces, is the final phase of Breakwater Town Center, a public-private partnership by the city of Imperial Beach and Sudberry Properties designed to energize the historic city center. The town center occupies a prominent 4.75-acre site over a three-block area on Palm Avenue (SR 75) and serves at the gateway to Imperial Beach and Coronado.

“We’re honored to pave the way for the prestigious Hilton brand to enter the Imperial Beach market,” said Colton Sudberry, president of Sudberry Properties. “While we’re currently following the County of San Diego’s guidelines regarding Covid-19 and serving only essential travelers, we look forward to putting the coronavirus pandemic behind us and welcoming tourists and other visitors.”

Serge Dedina, mayor of Imperial Beach, said, “The city of Imperial Beach is honored to have the brand new 100-room Hampton Inn & Suites Imperial Beach in our friendly little beach town. Its very cool beach modern design makes it the perfect hotel for families looking for awesome beach time, traveling surfers and the distinguished Navy SEALs who train nearby. Not only will this landmark beautiful new hotel be an invaluable resource for visitors, but it will have a major positive economic impact on our community: the resulting hotel room taxes will be used for civic improvements for the entire town.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with Colton Sudberry and Estean Lenyoun of Sudberry Properties and the Tharaldson team, to make this much needed project a reality,” he added.

The Hampton Inn & Suites’ development team includes architect Joseph Wong of JWDA of San Diego, Design Cell Architecture, an international firm headquartered in Las Vegas, and Watkins Landmark Construction of Carlsbad. The hotel is owned by Heritage Inn of Imperial Beach, LLC, with Sudberry and Tharaldson serving as managing partners. The hotel is operated by Tharaldson Hospitality Management under a franchise agreement with Hilton Worldwide Holdings. Robert Blatt is the general manager.

Hotel guests have easy access to Breakwater Town Center’s variety of eateries, including Baskin Robbins, Chipotle, Five Guys, Jersey Mikes, Poke 123, Starbucks and Wingstop, as well as national grocer Grocery Outlet.

“The addition of vibrant new retailers, restaurants, and homes in Imperial Beach, following the opening of Breakwater Town Center, has been very encouraging. The Navy Base Coronado Coastal Campus, which under construction with a million square feet of new buildings and reported to be 90 percent complete by 2021, is just 1.5 miles from Breakwater. With an estimated employment of 3,300 naval personnel, the Navy’s Coastal Campus will be a boon to businesses throughout Imperial Beach,” he said. Sudberry also noted that the city of San Diego has recently announced its intention to accelerate progress on the 2016 Palm Avenue Revitalization Plan to modernize and upgrade the city’s portion of Palm Avenue (a one-mile stretch of the road from Georgia Street to Interstate 5), creating a new gateway to Imperial Beach for businesses, housing, bicycling and pedestrians. The plan includes an elevated bike lane along Palm that will connect with the Bayshore Bikeway, landscaping, synchronized traffic signals, wayfinding signs, public art and façade improvements of local businesses.

“It has been exciting to be at the forefront of the transformation of Imperial Beach,” he said.
